Flights
Outbound, Fri 1 Jan 2027
LATAM LA75, direct, 2 h 18. Operated by LATAM Airlines Peru.
Return, Wed 6 Jan 2027
LATAM LA70, direct, 2 h 20. Operated by LATAM Airlines Peru.
Return fare: about US$250 per person (CLP 240,000) with a checked bag, our Balanced estimate. Early-January LATAM returns on this route are listed from about US$160 (CLP 150,000), and Sky from about US$180 (CLP 172,000) with a cabin bag only.
The Skyscanner search was filtered for a cabin bag, so check the live price, what the fare includes, and add a checked bag if we need one. Landing at 14:34 makes day 1 a drive straight to the lake, and the 10:05 return means the last night is in Villa Cerro Castillo, an hour from the airport, with the car back by 9:00.
Before anyone books
- Bring food for day 1.
Supermarkets close on 1 January. Pack snacks and breakfast in Santiago; do the big shop in Tranquilo on day 2.
Context & source
New Year's Day is a holiday. 1 January is one of Chile's non-negotiable holidays: supermarkets and malls must close, while restaurants, petrol stations and owner-run corner shops can open. Bring breakfast and snacks from Santiago, where shops close early on 31 December, and do the big shop in Tranquilo on day 2. 24horas - Exploradores: viewpoint only.
The glacier walk is permanently closed. Day 3 uses the reopened viewpoint trail; skip tours selling the ice trek.
Context & source
No more walking on Glaciar Exploradores. CONAF closed the glacier permanently in December 2025, the Coyhaique appeals court upheld it in February 2026, and the official ticket site now says walking on the glacier is banned for good. Some tour sites still sell the ice trek for US$160 to 180 (CLP 150,000 to 170,000), so skip them. The viewpoint trail reopened on 16 September 2026, and that's where day 3 goes. CONAF notice - Book a guide for Cerro Castillo.
The current Laguna trail notice requires a guide. Entry is 08:00–12:00; budget from US$47 each, including the 4x4 transfer.
Context & source
Plan on a guide for Cerro Castillo. CONAF's latest park notice (May 2026) lists the Laguna trail as guide-only, with entry between 08:00 and 12:00. It may relax for summer, but a guided day, from about US$47 (CLP 45,000) each, is the safe bet and includes the 4x4 ride to the upper trailhead. CONAF park page - Book the car and cabin first.
Early January is peak season. Allow extra driving time for roadworks near Bahía Murta on days 1 and 4.
Context & source
Peak season. Seven-seat 4x4s and cabins for the first week of January go first, so the car and the Tranquilo cabin should be booked this month. Paving works between Bahía Murta and Puente El Belga also started in August, so expect stop-and-go on days 1 and 4. 24horas

Supermarkets are shut for the holiday, so bring snacks and breakfast and plan dinner out in Tranquilo. It stays light until about 10 pm.

Sat 2 Jan

- Book guided trek from US$73 (CLP 69,000) each, or drive ourselves and pay only park entry, up to about US$12 (CLP 11,400)
- Sleep Tranquilo

Mon 4 Jan
Back up to Cerro Castillo
A slow morning by the lake, then the drive back north. Stop for lunch in Bahía Murta and at the rock paintings by the Río Ibáñez crossing, just before Villa Cerro Castillo.

-
Tue 5 Jan
Laguna Cerro Castillo
The big hike: about 14 km return and 1,100 m of climbing to a turquoise lagoon under the hanging glacier and the spires. Plan on 7 to 8 hours and an early start, since entries close at noon.
- Book guided hike, from ~US$47 (CLP 45,000) each
- Sleep Villa Cerro Castillo
Options & useful links
Anyone skipping it: the short Laguna Chiguay trail (2.5 km) by the park entrance, or horse riding from the village.

Car, roads and money
The two car options
Double-cab pickup Saver
Top view: seats in white, bags in yellow.
- Five seats, and the back row is snug for three adults on long gravel days.
- Bags ride in the bed under a cover. Ask for a hard canopy that locks.
- Mitta quoted US$114 a day (CLP 108,646) with basic cover; the Saver budget uses that. Six people don't fit.
Seven-seat SUV Balanced and Comfort
Top view: third row folded flat for the bags.
- Fold the third row and five bags fit inside, out of the dust and rain.
- More room for everyone on the four-hour drive down to the lake.
- About US$137 a day (CLP 130,000) in the Balanced budget, an estimate until we get a seven-seat quote. Takes six at a squeeze, with a roof box.
- Skip five-seat SUVs like the Forester: five people fit, but only three bags.
For our five rental days, that's about US$572 (CLP 543,000) for the pickup with basic cover or about US$685 (CLP 651,000) with no deductible. Rebook either for our times, collecting after the 14:34 landing and returning by 9:00 on 6 Jan. Still missing: a quote for a seven-seat SUV.

Rental companies

- Sixt, Balmaceda airportDesk inside the terminal at domestic arrivals, open 09:00 to 17:30 every day.

- Patagonia RentLocal firm opposite the airport with 4x2 and 4x4 vehicles.

Compare several at once
- Kayak, Balmaceda airportFilter by pickup truck or SUV.
- Skyscanner, Balmaceda airportIn Spanish; also lists Fox and Econorent.
Ask every company the same things
- Is it really 4x4? Most guarantee the category, not the model.
- The insurance deductible, and whether tyres and windscreen are covered on gravel.
- The credit-card deposit, the second-driver fee and any kilometre limit.
- For the pickup, a lockable hard cover over the bed.
- Collecting around 15:00 on 1 Jan and returning by 9:00 on 6 Jan makes five rental days. The Sixt and Europcar desks at the airport open at 9:00, so agree the early drop-off when booking.
- Get a real 4x4. The Cerro Castillo trailhead parking and some cabins need high clearance.
- Gravel is hard on windscreens and tyres. Ask what the insurance excludes, and check the spare before leaving the airport.
- The car should come with a full tank. Top up at the petrol station in Tranquilo, by the Campos de Hielo supermarket, and whenever else you pass one. Fuel in Aysén is the most expensive in Chile, roughly US$1.70 a litre (CLP 1,600).
- Rental desks want a licence held for at least a year and a credit card for the deposit. At least two of us should drive.
- Bring cash. Travel sites report no ATM in Tranquilo, village machines run dry, and some places only take cash.
- Signal is patchy. Download offline maps before day 1.
Three budgets
One route, three comfort levels. Choose your group size and plan to see the cost per person. October 2026 estimates include a 10% buffer.
Not included: travel insurance, extras like a glacier boat trip or horse riding, and tips. Dollar prices at about CLP 950 per US$1.
Where the savings come from
Going from Balanced to Saver, per person, biggest first:
Not worth cutting: fuel is the same in every plan, and the Cerro Castillo guide is required either way. Adding the guided Exploradores trek to Saver or Balanced costs about US$69 (CLP 66,000) more each.

- Warm hat, buff and gloves
